Animals have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, dogs first, growing up, then cats for most of my adult years, two of whom lived a good life all the way to 21 and 23. There's a particular kind of trust that builds slowly over time with an older animal, a language of small signals, and a practice of paying real attention which one learns to read. Over the years I've often looked after friends' pets too, and with my own older ones, I've seen them through various medications for ongoing age-related symptoms, so routines, dosages, and the small day to day adjustments that come with an aging pet are all familiar territory to me. Right now I share my home with a 12-year-old moggie/Norwegian Forest cat, who came to me as a rescue at six and settled beautifully once he felt safe — he has lots of little ways of communicating his needs. So I know what it is to live alongside family pets who have their own mind, their own rhythm, and their own way of letting you in. Whether it's a puppy full of energy or an old soul who moves a little slower these days, I meet each animal as they are no rushing, no forcing, just quiet attentiveness and the kind of care I'd want for my own.
